openlp.org Database Tools Update, Zefania-XML to CSV Converter and 2 new German Bible versions

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

I just published an update to the openlp.org Database Tools 0.5, this time including an .deb for Ubuntu and Debian. It automatically guesses the path to songs.olp and creates a backup before manipulating by default.

In addition to that I firstly published Zefania XML to CSV Converter 0.3. This tool converts Zefania-Sharp XML Files to CSV files that are compatible to openlp.org.

Thirdly, the German Bible versions Schlachter 1951 and Luther 1545 are now avaliable for download.

openlp.org DB Tools 0.4.1 & pysqlite-1.0.1.win32-py2.5.exe

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Just today I wanted to try my script at church, but I realized, the windows pysqlite libraries were not avaliable prebuilt for python 2.5

well, on my linux, its just ./configure && make, but on this windows machine, it was just a pain. i had to download several hundred megs of software and then run a little command that took just a few seconds. preparing this, getting all the libraries – with just a tiny bit of documentation how to build pysqlite-2.x but never for python 2.5 – since pysqlite2 is now in the main tree… i can tell you.

anyways, 5 hours later, I proudly present you pysqlite-1.0.1.win32-py2.5.exe fully compatible with all sqlite 2.x databases (which is what openlp.org uses at the moment.)

I also realised, that the installer that was linked on the openlp.org Utilities page was outdated. Please upgrade to pygtk-2.12.1-2.win32-py2.5.exe, pygobject-2.14.1-1.win32-py2.5.exe, pycairo-1.4.12-1.win32-py2.5.exe and gtk2-runtime-2.14.3-2008-09-25-ash.exe to use the tools on windows.

If I have some spare time, I will probably create a installer for your convenience.

As long with this there is an update to the openlp.org Database Tools, now 0.4.1 – just a little bugfix for Windows uses. And now it should work like charm, even on M$ Computers :) (see screenshot)

I really wish we’d update to sqlite3 soon… Then all of this hazzle is not relevant anymore. Remember: pysqlite 1 development stopped 2004!!

openlp.org Tool: Clean Songtitles 0.1

I just wrote my first openlp.org tool, called “Clean Songtitles 0.1″ It can be found on the newly created openlp.org Utilities pages, with a bunch of other things, like German Bibles and the most recent German language file.

Windows Vista DRM

Saturday, January 20th, 2007

I just crawled to trought the web, when I found an article, writing about the new protection methods and so on in Windows Vista. Here a short quote:

[...] I don’t think anyone’s under any illusions that Vista PCs won’t be crawling with malware shortly after the bad guys get their hands on them (there were already Vista exploits up for sale before the OS even hit the shelves). But what if the Vista content-protection technology had instead been applied towards malware protection? Instead of a separate protection domain for video playback, we might have a separate protection domain for banking and credit card details. [...] What a waste. What a waste. [...] As a user, there is simply no escape. Whether you use Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 95, Linux, FreeBSD, OS X, Solaris (on x86), or almost any other OS, Windows content protection will make your hardware more expensive, less reliable, more difficult to program for, more difficult to support, more vulnerable to hostile code, and with more compatibility problems.

So that’s what expecting us in the future. Even more expensive hardware, even if you don’t use Windows.
Looking forward to it…
